Report in Nigeria Outbreak of Deadly Lassa Fever!

Two youth corps members, one pharmacist and 3 staff of the 44 Nigeria Army Reference Hospital Kaduna have passed away at the Accident & Emergency unit of the hospital today, 21st February 2024 following clinical presentation consistent with Viral Hemorrhagic Fever likely Lassa Fever.

Medical practitioners, nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists and all hospital staff are hereby advised to be vigilant and to observe universal basic precautions when attending to all patients in the hospital, at home, in school or anywhere else.

What Lassa fever?

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus, which is transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces. β€œThe disease is endemic in Nigeria, with sporadic outbreaks occurring primarily during the dry season,”

Signs and symptoms

The signs and symptoms of Lassa Fever is usually gradual. It starts with fever general weakness, and malaise. After a few days, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, and abdominal pain may follow.

Prevention from Lassa fever

Primary transmission of the Lassa virus from its host to humans can be prevented by avoiding contact with Mastomys rodents, putting food away in rodent-proof containers and keeping the home clean help to discourage rodents from entering homes.

What NCDC Reported About Lassa?

About 2,122 Lassa fever cases recorded in 21 states said NCDC.

According to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, report about 2,122 suspected cases, 411 confirmed cases, and 72 deaths have been recorded from Lassa fever in Nigeria this year as of February 11, 2024. Read the comprehensive reports about the LASSA Fever with NCDC
